You can... if your level is not too high, since he levels up with the player apparently.
Level cap for Dead Thrall is 40. (I was level 51, had to use the console to bring his level down. xD; )
He doesn't make the zombie noises and talks normally during combat. So he's a nice thrall to have. :B
He dies easily though, but his destruction magic can be nice. :)

Oh I think my dovahkiin level is 42 or 43 now :| looks like I cannot use that spell on him. I play Skyrim on PS3. No console commands >.<
